MICHIGANA 1955-1964 EVERY NAME INDEX

The first issue of Michigana was published in 1955 by Western Michigan Genealogical Society. In 1981, a printed index was prepared for the first ten years of publication (1955-1964) to make our quarterly more useful to our members and other researchers. It has now been made available on our web site for the use of the Internet Genealogical Community. We appreciate the dedication of our early membership, their contributions, writings, and support of Michigana. It is our hope that this index will facilitate finding the valuable material published therein.

No index had ever been prepared for the first eight years. During those early years, publication of Michigana varied from four to six issues a year, and pagination began with each issue. For those volumes, it is necessary to give the issue number as well as the volume and page. A problem arose with the 1964 issues, when all four were erroneously continued as volume 9 instead of volume 10. Pagination began with number 1 as usual for a new year. To assist in locating names in this volume we have used the designation 9B. 1963 remains as volume 9.

Cross references were prepared for name variations noted in the publications and for women's maiden names when given. When a name is unknown, a line indicates that fact.

A second printed index has been prepared for 1965 through 1974 in the hope it also will extend the usefulness of the periodical. It is hoped that this index can be added here soon as an additional resource.

Credit should be given to Esther Schichtel, Delilah Jourden, and Maxine McConnell for their time and patience in indexing this first ten years of Michigana and Jan Hulbert for her typing. We appreciate the work of these loyal members. That typed document was scanned, proofed and digitized by  Don Bryant in October and November, 1998.

The WMGS Search Committee works in cooperation with the Grand Rapids Public Library and will, for a set fee, do genealogical research. $15.00 per hour, (a minimum of one hour, maximum of three hours per request). For lookups of the articles contained in MICHIGANA, please provide the name entries exactly as they appear in the index. Generally, more than one lookup can be done in the one hour minimum.
